Where I’ve Been…

Travel Highlights

A Young Explorer

Being “forced” to ski when I was five years old (or less).

Growing up, my family always valued time away from home. We had annual camping trips with family friends to the Poconos, weekend getaways to Six Flags and Hershey Park, and day trips to Vermont in the winter to ski. Looking back, it makes sense why I’ve had an urge to explore.

Up until 2023, I had always traveled with my family (not including a school trip to Europe in 2018). My mom was always the one on top of organizing itineraries, flights, and hotels, while the rest of my family went along for the ride. We were never too keen on “relaxing” during trips either, besides one tropical vacation to Jamaica where we lounged on the beach most of the time. More often though, you’ll find us skiing in Banff, hiking through Norway, or snorkeling in Australia.

Japan

Miyajima Japan - One of my first trips to Japan to visit my grandparents. This is one of my favorite pictures ever.

I don’t remember everything from my early trips to Japan, but seeing the deer on Miyajima Island and getting ice cream with my grandparents is always an iconic moment. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Japan a handful of times, and I’ve found that visiting a place more than once is one way to track growth. Most recently in 2018, I remember the familiarity of the streets and sounds of my grandparent’s neighborhood, but everything felt a little smaller. I’ll be visiting Japan again with friends in 2024, visiting cities like Kyoto and Kobe for the first time. It’ll be exciting to see how the sights and sounds compare to six years ago.

Eastern Europe

Prague, Czechia - Currently holds my award for “most aesthetic city”, despite the bed bugs we found in our hostel on the first night.

Our route through Europe, with some day trips to nearby cities along the way

I’ve made two trips to Eastern Europe, each with a completely different purpose. My first trip was with a group of high school classmates and my World History Teacher in 2017, where we explored the region’s deep history. To this day, this has been the most powerful trip I’ve been on, and I doubt that there will be any that surpass it.

Together, we’ve navigated four countries and seven camps over ten emotionally-taxing days, submerging ourselves in the atrocities that some people today deny even exist.
— Excerpt from my college essay

Copenhagen, Denmark - The last stop of a month long trip through Europe

My second pass through Eastern Europe was a bit different. After finishing my undergraduate degree in 2023, my friend and I planned out a route through Europe. We chose Eastern Europe since it was the cheaper than other destinations like the UK or Italy, and it had a rich history as I’ve experienced previously. Berlin and Prague were cities that I returned to and like re-visiting Japan, I felt a sense of growth when I walked down those same streets from 2017. Although I was with friends, this was the first time I had planned out an extended trip on my own, and it was more than rewarding. I also learned that if I can travel for a month with just a carry-on bag, I could travel anywhere.

Vienna, Austria - One thing that made this trip so memorable was that I brought together friends from my childhood, high school, and college. People who have been with me in all different areas of my life, meeting in one place for the first time.
